Justin Cressall

Co-Founder & Managing Partner

Justin Cressall is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Gritstone Asset Management and is based in Bethesda, Maryland.


Prior to co-founding Gritstone in 2018, Mr. Cressall served as an Executive Vice President and Deputy Chief Financial Officer at Hannon Armstrong Sustainable Infrastructure.  During Mr. Cressall’s time at the company, Hannon Armstrong focused on investing in and providing services to the sustainable infrastructure market, managed $4.7 billion in assets and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.


Prior to joining Hannon Armstrong, Mr. Cressall served as a Senior Vice President and Managing Director at American Capital.  Mr. Cressall joined American Capital in 2007 and worked at the company until it was ultimately sold in 2017.  At American Capital, Mr. Cressall focused on establishing and building the company’s asset management platform.  Mr. Cressall’s experience at American Capital included establishing multiple asset management platforms, including the formation of multiple public and private alternative asset investment funds, raising in aggregate more than $17.5 billion in equity capital.  At American Capital, Mr. Cressall also led, or provided material support for, investments in multiple alternative investment opportunities representing aggregate committed capital of more than $1 billion. In this capacity, Mr. Cressall worked closely with Tom McHale and Nicholas Skibo, the other co-founders of Gritstone Asset Management.


Before its sale, American Capital was publicly traded on the NASDAQ and was a leading alternative asset manager, with $77 billion in assets under management generating $152 million in related annual revenue.  American Capital was acquired by Ares Capital Corporation in 2017. Following the sale of American Capital, Mr. Cressall joined Ares Management, a global alternative asset manager with $106 billion in assets under management.


Prior to American Capital, Mr. Cressall served as a Senior Vice President and Treasurer of Platinum Underwriters, a publicly listed global reinsurance company with over $2 billion in assets under management and also served as a Director at KPMG within the audit and transaction advisory practices.


Mr. Cressall holds a MBA from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto and a BA in economics from Tufts University.  Mr. Cressall is also a Chartered Accountant.
